Childish Gambino debuted his new song “Redbone” on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show. After “Me and Your Mama,” it’s the song he has released from his forthcoming album Awaken, My Love! One attendee of Gambino’s ‘Pharos’ listening event in September noted the album’s “minimal rapping.” Between “Redbone” and “Me and Your Mama,” Gambino is clearly taking his cues from the ’70s and has yet to deliver one (rap) bar. “Redbone” sounds like a Barry White song as much as anything else.
“Daylight,” he sings with distorted vocals. “I wake up feeling like you won’t play right / I usually know but now that shit don’t feel right / It made me put away my pride.” The song, which follows “Me and Your Mama,” is one of 11 tracks off Awaken, which also includes “Have Some Love,” “Boogieman,” “Zombies,” and “The Night Me and Your Mama Met.”
